Definitely getting this. All the new zombie games are getting lamely repetitive.

"Stand a safe distance away from zombies and shoot them, perhaps get close to one occasionally."

They really have to bring the close quarters/adrenaline rush back into zombie games.

i agree Left 4 Dead was good but it was all shoot them before they get close. (actually the whole part of dropping your movement speed to 20% of what it is got really annoying they got close)if you try to play on there realism mode its almost impossible without experienced players and even then it can still be frustrating

I actually don't mind "shoot the zombie" type games, but all too often you find yourself with an abundance of ammo, and you just keep pulling the trigger without any worries of running out of ammunition. (Left 4 Dead)

I think game developers can make their games far more exciting and realistic by making guns a rare but powerful weapon that should be saved for emergencies, somewhat like the earlier Resident Evil games. Back in those days, you didn't use your pistol for every little zombie crawling around, you saved the ammo for that shit till you hit the boss and then you unloaded everything into it.

i think it would be awesome if you say, take the fallout map style(Interplays versions) make it zombies zombie spin on it then top it off as an MMO that would be, unless it ends up like wow -_-

A friend of mine got a copy, but since he is kinda... "busy" at the moment he lent me his copy so I could play it. I just finished the 1st Act and here are my impressions:

The graphics:
They look really well, the screenshots shown do fit.
You start at the hotel with a great view on the beach, and lots of blood to hint at problems. If you still dont get it, some people fall dramatically downwards while you're still checking out the view. Shortly afterwards you finish some kind of tutorial and start at the beach itself and you can finally go wherever you want. The world is kinda "Open Play", you can go wherever you want, but only until you reach the border of the "map". Going on will cause the screen to black out and suddenly you're back where you started.

The Maincharacter(s):
At the beginning you can choose between 4 different "maincharacters" each with slightly different stats and each with his own weapon preference. This might sound like a lot, but the stats consist of Speed, Stamina and strength. Weapon preference means that you get 10% bonus damage on either throwing-, blunt-, blade or shooting- weapons.
Storywise, they're interchangeable. You might control only one, but during some cutscenes you can see all 4 of them. Even if you never see them ingame (when you're playin solo).
You can be either:
-A washed-out Ex-Football Star (alcohol, street-racing, dead passerbys, jail)
-An afro-american Rapper (he wrote the song you can hear in the Intro "Who do you Voodoo, Bitch?", ten years later its still his only hit)
-A chinese Waitress (was supposed to work in the first All-woman Investigation Unit, instead she was sent to the island as "Informer" to spy on wealthy westerners)
-And a female Ex-Cop (Complicated story, lets just say she's hard as iron and takes no shit from anyone at all, no matter how influental they are)
The only thing these 4 have in common is that they're immune against whatever it is that transforms normal humans into zombies with a single bite.

Now the gameplay: As you might have suspected, the focus of the game is close-combat with several types of zombies, where you can choose to fight with your fists (bad choice) or pick up anything you can use as weapon. The game is lending you a hand: there are place you can find certain weapons, and they respawn if you quit the game and continue another time. Since you're in a Resort, you can find all kinds of stuff the tourists left behind during the outbreak: for example money, duct tape, Phones, etc... even some working cars!
You start collecting most of these items to "craft" special weapons which really make your life easier on the island. Sadly you have to find the blueprints for them first...
Most of the time you will encounter just zombies, but sometimes you'll find survivors and they'll have a few Quests for you (you get classy, bloodsplattered, crumpy paper where your handwriting lines out what to do, how difficult it is and your reward). You'll spend quite some time on these sidequests... just to earn money or get the rewards they offer.
All your money will be needed to repair your weapons at "Work benches" and to Upgrade them (improve their stats). "Crafting" a weapon is more like "Pimping" it: you take a knife, use duct-tape to get some batteries on your knife and then you got a "Stun-Knife". The better your basic knife wa, the better your final crafted weapon. And depending on your Level the weapons you find will become better and better... which means you will craft the same weapon again, sometime in the next future.

Multiplayer:
It is possible to invite up to 3 friends into your game, either via internet or LAN. I'll wait for my friend before I play past Act 1, since I really want to see how it plays when you have a friend on your side during the quest or battles.

The battle against Zombies:
The island is literally full of dead: there are very few places you wont find the living dead, or their victims. Blood was generously applied on every available surface and you can find some corpses that rise if you get close to them. Depending on your weapon of choice your combat style will vary in a few details:
Blunt weapons have high "Force" stats, which are helpful if you want to let them kiss the ground. It also helps when you try to break their bones^^
Blade weapons do not have the "Force" available to blunt weapons, but If you hit the zombies right you can sever their limbs. that includes their heads!
Throwing Weapons means that every weapon you have can be thrown. the amount of weapons you can equip are somewhat limited, but you can always pick them up after the battle and they're as good as new.
I cant really say anything about fireweapons. During the first chapter I only found 2 defective revolvers (both quest rewards) and 1 magazine for each. Aim for the head and goodbye.
Then start looking for ammo. Or pray that you find some. Because I never did...

Summary:
Since I only played 1 Act (15% of mainstory according to my Questlog) I cant really say much about the whole game. The Act ends when you finally leave the Resort
(Hotel + Beach) to go into town in order to find some supplies. I'll just make two lists with Good and Bad points. The version I played with was v1.01.

Good Points:
  • -You get close up to the Zombies and when you use your own crafted weapons to kill them in one strike (Slash! There goes your head!!) you feel great.
  • -The Graphic is very good, and even during the first act you will see many different places: from sandy beaches to hotel-pavillions. From a Lighthouse to gas stations to the hotel itself.
  • -The NPCs have great voice acting, each of the more important NPCs can be recognised quite easily and soon you will start to like them (or not)
  • -The weapon system is interesting and constantly requires you to think fast, which weapon to use, where to strike or if you need to run away.
  • -You can use your environment to fight. You can kill zombies by kicking them from cliffs (or roofs), setting them on fire with molotovs or electrocuting them.

Bad Points:
  • -There are LOTS of graphical errors. Nothing you can see at the first glance, but they are very obvious if you explore your world like I tend to do:
Shrubs are floating in the air, pillars are standing inside of a weaponcrate, an energydrink you use to heal yourself is floating in the air (the table has "vanished") are just a few examples. There are also clipping errors: When you try to smash a door, you can sometimes glimpse behind it, if you try long enough, some rocks that are supposed to block your way can be overcome. Same can happen with the few NPCs you encounter, and if you have to escort someone who's stuck between rocks... RELOAD!
  • -Your weapons degrade apallingly fast. I can understand if a wooden paddle breaks after killing a few zombies with it. I can even understand that a "Heavy Iron Pipe" bends when you hit dead people with it. But if I have a mace of solid steel, why is it broken after I fought only 5 halfrotten zombies? Same goes for my "Military Machete".
The higher your Level, the better the weapons you can find. Which just means you have to "Grab&Smash" and hope you wont run out of stuff to grab...
(Sidenote: the higher the Level of your weapon, the more damage it does. That also means the amount of money you need to repair it increases very fast.)
  • -Your car is an Indestructible weapon of mass destruction. Well... it only destroys zombies. The car itself will never receive a single dent, not even if you crash at highspeed into a parked bus. At most, the front-window will break, but thats it. You aim at the zombes and just floor it. After the crash you'll be dizzy for a few sec, then you can continue on. The only time you can get hurt is when you missed a zombie and it attacks you through from the side.
  • -There are some areas where the designers obviously intended you to not have a car. Using the clipping errors allows you ignore that and take your car everywhere you have enough space to drive ahead.
  • -You can use the environment, but it can also harm you: Jumping from ~2m height will lower your health as if you just received a heavy hit from a zombie. And did you ever see a zombie drown?
  • -There are spawnpoints in this game. Literally. If you leave for a while, you can come back and predict exactly where a zombie will be standing. they respawn if you do not see the respawn point for a certain time. I was fighting inside the hotels underground kitchen, which was closed off according to one surviving guard. The zombies just reappeared after a while.
  • -The zombies are always the same level as you are, at most they are 1 level lower. this means they can suffer more damage and deal more damage to you. If your weapon is not string enough to deal with them, you will soon be down to 10-30% weapon condition, and then you have to use your money to repair it.
  • -Zombies are predictable. After a while, you know what to do against which type of zombie, what kind of weapon is suited best to kill them... and you just ignore them because they're not worth your while. A few times I noticed how I was killing groups of zombies while thinking philosophical question about life, what kind of people those zombies once were and "Hey, this zombie looks just like an Undead-reskin from one of those tourists I talked to just now!"

Really Bad Point (at least for me):
  • -It is said "open World", but "Open Cage" would be a better term. After the tutorial I just walked through the nearby area, killing zombies and exploring. I spent a few hours checking out the bungalows, to see which ones I can enter and which not. I found my first car, drove around until i hit the first "road-block" and turned back. One occasion I want to emphasize was a small house at the side of the road in the mountains: urrounded by a fence, front door locked, I saw a few crates that led me to the top of a rock, where I could easily jump over and land inside the fance. At least thats what I thought, since I didnt know that the house was secured by invisible barriers that stopped me from entering (All the "Falling down the rock eventually killed my hero...). 30 mins later I gave up frustrated and decided to begin the "main quest".
During which I suddenly encountered lots of people who werent there before, closed bungalow-doors were suddenly open (or open-able)
And the house I spent 30 mins to jump over the fence? Suddenly there was an NPC, a side quest and 5 mins later I cleared out the friggen house and was on my way, feeling somewhat cheated.
  • -After the first act I now know: Do not bother walking around to explore the resort. If you follow the mainquests, you will encounter 90% of the sidequests without even gong out of your way. The remainig 10% will be encountered on your way from A to B. All the locations you can enter... you will be able to enter. But only after you reached a specific point in the main-story, or if you received a specific sidequest. The rest is wasted time during which you just fight the same kind of zombies again and again until your weapons break.

i just go it today and here is my impression . The controls were really clunky and the game looked like bad, like unfinished bad, which they did a bad job of covering up by throwing bloom everywhere. The quests are kind of repetitive and the dumbasses in charge released the debug version on steam because they're morons. so save your money and get from somewhere else just not steam.

oh and welcome back dude Smile

Sounds overall pretty bad. In that case I would rather trust Namo and wouldn't get it ... since I have seen some Scene from it (My brother got it), I somehow agree with him in the most points ...

I understand some game like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion as an open world game ...

Well. As I was thinking about getting it, I would rather not after I read this. Thanks for the report, Namo, and thanks patio for the warning of the steam version of the game.

Yeah, the game being unfinished was also my general impression. Killing Zombies is fun, but you cant make a game with only that.

PostSubject: Re: Dead Island   Mon 12 Sep - 7:02

Just finished the game and I wanted to write down my final thoughts about it before I delete it from my HD and give the copy back:

Summary:

Gameplay:

Story:

My honest and perosnal opinion about this Game:
I would NOT buy this game.
If you play with friends and need something different form Left4Dead, you might have a few fun hours with this. If you are interested in this because of the term "open world", dont be fooled: the game allows you to walk around everywhere you want, but certain areas will be off limits until you accepted a specific quest. This is NOT an open world like you know it from Oblivion, Morrowind, Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas.
The story was nothing special or intriguing, instead it was fitting for a game where fighting zombies with melee weapons was the focus. The NPCs had great voice acting, and those with bigger parts looked great.
Sadly this also means that the minor NPCs all looked somehow similar, and after their part was done, they became a moving part of the background.
You dont really care if they survive or not. There are a few attempts to make you care, but... somehow it doesnt relly work.

As long as you dont really care about a good story and if you have a few friends to kill some time, this might be a game for you. But after finishing this once you dont have any reason to do so again, so maybe Left4Dead might be a better game.
